What is PMMA roofing?
Polymethyl methacrylate is a synthetic resin obtained by the polymerization process of methyl methacrylate. It is a type of transparent and rigid plastic, often used as an impenetrable replacement of glass (windows, dormers, laminated signboards, airliners, etc.).

This material has proven to be an economical alternative to polycarbonate when tensile strength, transparency, polishing and UV resistance are more important than impact strength and chemical and heat resistance.

A preferred material for polycarbonate, as it does not contain harmful bisphenol-A, a sub-unit found in polycarbonate materials. This resin is also used for other purposes thanks to its moderate properties, ease of processing, along with its low cost.

History:

For the first time, the material was discovered by British chemist Rowland Hill and John Crawford of Imperial Chemical Industries (ICI) in England (1930). ICI registers the product under the trademark of Perspex.
At the same time, Otto Rom (chemist and industrialist) in Germany is trying to produce safe glass by methacrylate polymerisation between the two layers of glass.
As a result, the polymer is separated from the glass, providing a transparent plastic sheet with a Plexiglas trademark. Both products entered the commercial market in the late 1930s. Later, E.I. Du Pont de Nemours & Company (now DuPont) in the US presented their own product under the trade name Lucite.

Main Application - During World War II, when airbags and bombs for PMMA towers were made.
